Summary : X-VOMS
Description :
X-VOMS is an advanced Virtual Organisation (VO) management library for
supporting secure and flexible collaborations and resource sharing among
people, projects and organisations. It is written in Java and back by
a (Hibernate-based) X-VOMS database schema. Like other VO management
software packages, X-VOMS provides a set of APIs for managing VO
membership and credentials.

Whilst providing functionalities similar to those of an existing one,
The novel design of X-VOMS allows it go beyond the support for
typically focussed and project-centric scientific collaborations and
resource sharing across scientific institutions but also complex and
diverse commercial scenarios spanning multiple industries (e.g. supply
chains). With X-VOMS, VOs can be created and destroyed either
statically, or on-the-fly (dynamically) from within applications.

It supports a powerful VO management structure: users can join
multiple VOs under different types of VO models; and credentials from
all (or a selection of) registered VOs can be obtained via API calls.
This makes it possible to share and use resources offered by different
VOs concurrently.

X-VOMS can be used as a backend of different presentation frontends: a
web application (allowing the access via a web browser), and a OS
daemon service (allowing the access via a OS command line console, or
directly from a user application). Security controls for VO
management are built into X-VOMS. All accesses are subject to the same
set of security controls, regardless of which frontend a request is from.
In addition to managing users and VOs, X-VOMS can also be used to manage
resources. This makes it possible to construct an end-to-end secure VO
environment.

X-VOMS manages, but does not distribute, credentials. It can be used
with a Certification Authority (CA), such as the Credential
Distribution Authority (CDA) service developed by the XtreemOS
project, or an attribute authority, to disseminate credentials.
X-VOMS supports the conventional username/password type
authentication. Thus, users do not need to have a X.509 certificate
to access VO management facilities offered by X-VOMS.
